Rental scams are real: fake landlords take a deposit for a room they don't own and disappear. Here's what we do, and what you should do.
How we check landlords
Phone and ID verification
Every landlord confirms a cellphone number by OTP. The Verified badge is only given once ID details match the name on the listing.
Proof of address or ownership
Verified landlords upload a municipal bill, title deed or permission-to-let letter for the stand they are renting out.
Tenant reviews after the move
Once a viewing request closes, tenants rate the landlord. Bad ratings drop a listing out of the results.
Duplicate and scam detection
The same photos or phone number posted under different names gets the account flagged and suspended.
Eight rules before you pay anything
- Never pay a deposit before you have seen the room in person and met the owner at the property.
- Never pay via eWallet, gift voucher or a stranger's personal cash-send if you have not seen the place.
- Ask for the owner's ID and match it to the municipal bill for that address.
- Do the viewing in daylight and take a friend or family member with you.
- Tell someone where you are going — send them the address before you leave.
- Get a written lease and a signed deposit receipt, even a simple one on WhatsApp.
- Be suspicious of rent far below what the area normally charges — that's the oldest bait.
